With just a few hours’ notice, Trinity once again mobilized volunteers, prepared the facility, and was ready to receive evacuees who were seeking to escape Hurricane Dorian as the storm threatened the eastern coast of Georgia. Between the time the shelter opened on Monday, September 2nd and closed on Thursday, September 5th, Trinity housed more than 175 men, women, and children.

Three of the children were babies who were born prematurely and when they arrived at the shelter were only one month old. This was the third time in the past four years Trinity has been asked to open a Red Cross shelter for evacuees. While the space could hold twice as many people, our shelter leadership decided it was more important to provide a safe and comfortable place for our guests. Because of that commitment to focus on quality care and gracious hospitality, many of our guests returned to Trinity this year. They know they will be safe and loved by the Trinity family. Some of our guests attended the weekly communion service at Trinity, others enjoyed recreation at the KROC center, and everyone was invited to share in a night of celebration held at Augusta University sponsored by the AU Wesley Foundation.
