Scott grew up in Decatur, Georgia at Belvedere UMC.
He is a graduate of Avondale High School, Young Harris College, Mid-America Nazarene University, Olathe KS and Candler School of Theology at Emory University.
Scott was ordained in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1985. He has served churches in Toccoa, Augusta (St. Luke UMC), Jefferson, Commerce, Cumming, Grayson and Gainesville.
In January of 1999, Scott was appointed to a church plant in Forsyth County. Creekside UMC began in the wrestling room of South Forsyth High School. When Scott was reappointed in 2008, the church was housed in three building sitting on 32 acres of land.
Scott served as the Senior Pastor of Grayson United Methodist Church. During that time, Student Ministry participation went from 25 to 225 students. Grayson had the highest percentage increase of weekly worship attendance in the North Ga. Conference in 2013. Grayson UMC is actively involved missionally from its local community to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Scott is married to the former Sandy Mathis of Gainesville. Sandy worked for ReThink. ReThink provides faith-based curriculum for children and student ministries.
Scott and Sandy have three daughters:
- Sarah is a graduate of Young Harris College, worked as an EMT in White County, and earned a Physician Assistant degree from School at New England University in Portland, ME. Sarah and Cameron were married in September of 2018 and both work as trauma surgery/acute care Pas in Fresno, CA.
- Allison is a graduate of Young Harris College and North Caroline State University where she earned a Master of Chemical Engineering. She is employed by RWDC Industries in Athens, GA. Allison and Andrew were married in September of 2020.
- Caroline is a Registered Behavior Technician and works one on one with autistic children in clinics in Gainesville and Buford.
Scott enjoys trout fishing and kayaking with Sandy and backpacking on the Appalachian Trail.
He also enjoys flying RC (remote controlled) planes and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles- yes, drones), snow skiing and playing golf.
Scott and Sandy love being in this season of ministry with the sisters and brothers at Trinity on the Hill!
Also, Scott does not like mayonnaise.
