A group of Congolese women, with help from the UNited Methodist Committee on Relief, have formed a coop to harvest and extract sunflower oil.

"When disasters happen, it is local churches that provide the first response to their communities. "

Originally founded in 1940 as MCOR, The Methodist Committee on Overseas Relief was created to assist the displaced and vulnerable left by the devastation of World War II. MCOR was meat to serve as a “voice of conscience among Methodist to act in the relief og human suffering without distinction of race, color, or creed.” This remains the mission of UMCOR (The United Methodist Committee on Relief) today.

UMCOR strives to cultivate self-sufficiency and [partnerships within vulnerable communities. They respond to national and international disasters, fight poverty, minister to refugees and immigrants, provide clean water, and work to reduce hunger   .

“When disasters happen, it is local churches that provide the first response to their communities. This basic understanding – that disaster response is local – forms the foundation for UMCOR’s U.S. disaster training and response efforts.”

UMCOR can provide disaster response expertise and knowledge, networking among a national database of volunteers, experts, local government and other organizations, and even emergency grants.

    NO WORSHIP SERVICE TODAY

Due to the Mayor’s declaration of a State of Emergency and the associated curfew in effect until 12:00 PM, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our 11:00 AM worship service today.

While we deeply value gathering together, the safety of our congregation and staff must come first. We believe this is the most responsible and faithful decision given the current conditions. We invite you to worship with us through a prerecorded message of Pastor Scott’s sermon for today, Part III of our Apprenticed by Jesus series, Follow & Abide, which is available here: https://youtu.be/0XlSWIS-jjs
